For the last 5 or 6 weeks I have been trying to get out of a funk. I have been poking it, prodding it, talking to people about it, ignoring it, applying the mighty force of my intellect to it. Hell, I have even brought the full weight of my spirituality into it. That’s right, I called up the energy behind all the universe and asked for help. Nothing, nada, zilch. Doomed to the Funk. “Woe is me, right?!”
And then, in what I would describe as an everyday miracle, it all changed.
There is a list that hangs on my cork board above my desk. On this list, in no particular order are the words Website, Social Media, Coach, Stretch, Read, Listen, Write, Practice and the latest addition is Walk. We just got a super cute puppy, Sigi. You may have noticed that some of the words on my list appear work related and some appear play related. In truth all of them are about both and neither. What they truly have in common is that I like doing them all.
It happened very innocently and went unnoticed for weeks. One by one, week by week my list shrank. To be clear, I did not stop liking them, I stopped doing them. Today, as I picked up my bass I realized that when I stopped doing what I like I stopped liking what was left.
What will your response be when someone tells you to do “just do what you like?” Mine will once again be, of course, it’s all I do.
