What are you doing? No really, what are you actually doing?
You want to change your life, a business, careers, change your hair colour, be more outgoing, get more flexible, work less, see your kids more, lose weight etc etc.
The question is “Do you do or do you don’t?” Are you taking action or are you not?
When this, than that, is a pretty common and seemingly reasonable way to live life. Huh, What the hell does that mean? Well substitute “this” with whatever objection your mind comes up and “that” with your goal and you will get the idea. When (this) the summer is over and the kids go back to school (that) I will get in shape. When (this) my kids move out (that) I will travel, if she/he (this) does that one more time (that) I will leave her/him.
So what is stopping you? I don’t have any idea what you think is stopping you (there is a clue there) but I know what isn’t stopping you.
What isn’t stopping you is time, or money, or the weather, or the weddings. Your kids, job, wife, husband, brother, mother, father? None of them are stopping you either. Ok, what about my boss, teachers, the economy, global warming, my age, my looks, my ex, or the furnace? Nope, all none factors.
I am going on record to say that the only thing that stops you from doing exactly what you want is the fact that you think. That’s right. The only thing stopping you from doing what you want is the fact that you think and that you believe your thoughts have something to say about you.
A moment to entertain the absurd. You’re telling me that if I want to play in the NBA the only thing that is stopping me is that I believe some thought that says I can’t? No, that is absurd. If you are 5’4 and your name isn’t Spud Webb you will not make it to the show. But, you might find yourself working as a therapist or coach or trainer within the NBA and that might be a pretty cool adventure itself. If you are honest within yourself you will see your path.
Leaving yourself at the mercy of your environment, whether you think you are paralyzed by fear, anxiety, or see the world as against you, whether your world is a bed of roses and sunshine radiates from your butt, you still have to act. Without action you are a donter. You still have to hit the ball. And that is what this is all about. Be a doer! HIT THE BALL!
Get out of the chat rooms, and FB groups, get off Instagram, and Twitter, get out into your community, take an active roll in your life. Play your game., stop thinking about it too much. Stop being enamoured with the idea of action and go out and act. Stop trying, start doing!
Too many people spend too much time getting ready to act. It is ironic how this non action can fool us. It is insidious. It looks like action, it even kinda feels like action. Newsflash. It isn’t! Trying is not doing. Only doing is doing.
Get out there, hit the fucking ball. If you shank it, grab another, if you slice that one grab another. The possibilities for action are just as varied and infinite as the possibilities for inaction.
I used to play a lot of pool. We used to say honest shot honest leave. Take your best shot. Life has a way of rewarding honest effort.
Be a doer not a donter and you will see that life makes its way through you, just fine.
